What happens in the body during a single AVACEN session? An exploratory pilot study conducted in an assisted living facility examined that question by measuring participants immediately before and after one 20-minute session.
The study included 24 adults between 52 and 81 years old. Researchers combined physiological assessments with a wellness questionnaire to look at short-term changes in circulation, heart-related measures, brain blood flow and oxygenation-related measures, and how participants felt.
Participants reported feeling better after the session
Some of the clearest findings came from the wellness questionnaire.
After the session, participants reported 22% greater relaxation, 17% more energy, and 11% greater physical comfort. At the same time, reported stress decreased by 40%, fatigue by 26%, aches and pains by 25%, anxiety by 23%, and irritability by 21%.
Overall, the total wellness score increased by 15%. Several of these changes reached statistical significance, including relaxation, energy, physical comfort, stress, fatigue, aches and pains, and total wellness.
An interesting circulation response
The researchers also looked at peripheral circulation—the movement of blood through areas such as the hands.
One measure, called Bilateral Flow Gain, was used to evaluate circulation-related changes on both sides of the body. This was particularly interesting because AVACEN was applied to only one hand.
After the session, Bilateral Flow Gain increased by 25% on the left and 30% on the right. The increase on the right reached statistical significance. The fact that changes were detected in both hands suggests that the measured response may not have been limited only to the area where AVACEN was applied.
The Perfusion Index, another measure related to the amount of blood reaching peripheral tissue, also increased by 18%.
What about the brain-related measurements?
The brain depends on a continuous blood supply to deliver oxygen and nutrients needed for normal activity. For this reason, researchers also examined measurements related to cerebral blood flow and regional blood oxygenation.
Importantly, these were non-invasive proxy measurements, not direct measurements of blood flowing through the brain.
Across the whole group, the average changes were small. However, an interesting pattern appeared when participants were separated according to their starting values. Those who began with lower brain oxygenation- and blood flow-related values tended to increase, while those starting with higher values tended to decrease. The researchers interpreted this as a possible tendency toward a more balanced physiological range rather than simply increasing these measurements in everyone.
An encouraging first step
Overall, a single 20-minute AVACEN session was followed by measurable changes in both physiological parameters and self-reported wellness.
Because this was a small pilot study measuring only immediate before-and-after responses, the findings are preliminary. They cannot establish long-term effects. They do, however, provide useful early findings that can help guide further research.
