Background and Rationale
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects communication, social interaction, and behavior. Laser acupuncture combines traditional acupuncture with photobiomodulation (PBM), providing a non-invasive, needle-free approach that may support conventional therapies, particularly in children.
Evidence from a Randomized Clinical Trial
A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial evaluated 46 children (2–6 years) with ASD. Participants received either active or sham laser acupuncture, alongside occupational and sensory integration therapy. The protocol included 18 sessions over 6 weeks using a 785nm infrared laser (1J per acupoint). Speech and social interaction were assessed using the WeeFIM® questionnaire.
Key Findings
Compared with placebo, laser acupuncture significantly improved speech comprehension, verbal expression, and social interaction. Children receiving active treatment were 18.8 times more likely to improve speech comprehension, 50.2 times more likely to improve verbal expression, and 7.2 times more likely to improve social interaction. No adverse events were reported during the study.
Clinical Observations
Researchers and caregivers also reported improvements in eye contact, responsiveness to name, verbal attempts, social engagement, and reductions in repetitive behaviors. These observations complement the standardized clinical outcomes.
Limitations
The findings should be interpreted with caution due to the small sample size, short follow-up period, and the fact that all participants received concurrent occupational therapy. Therefore, laser acupuncture should be considered a complementary therapy, rather than a replacement for conventional interventions.
Clinical Interpretation
Laser acupuncture may be a promising adjunctive therapy for improving speech and social communication in children with ASD. Its non-invasive, painless, and safe nature makes it particularly suitable for pediatric care, although larger clinical trials are still needed to confirm its efficacy.

When combined with conventional rehabilitation, laser acupuncture may enhance communication and social interaction while offering a safe and comfortable treatment option. Further research is needed to establish optimal treatment protocols and long-term outcomes.
