Study Design
In this experimental study, 12 healthy older adults (mean age 69 years) completed a 6-week passive heat therapy intervention. Participants performed 2–3 weekly sessions consisting of 60 minutes of whole-body hot water immersion at 40°C, maintaining a core temperature between 38.5°C and 39.0°C.
Researchers assessed working memory, logical reasoning, reaction time, cerebral blood flow, sleep quality, and biomarkers associated with brain aging before and after the intervention.
What Did They Find?
After six weeks of passive heat therapy, participants demonstrated significant improvements in working memory (1-back) (p=0.023) and logical reasoning (p=0.002), suggesting that repeated heat exposure may enhance important aspects of cognitive performance.
A single heat therapy session also produced an immediate improvement in a more demanding working memory task (2-back), indicating that passive heating may exert both acute and chronic effects on brain function.
Although no significant changes were detected in carotid blood flow, sleep quality, or neurodegeneration biomarkers, the authors suggest that other physiological adaptations induced by repeated heat exposure may explain the observed cognitive improvements.

Why It Matters
Passive heat therapy is increasingly recognized as a non-pharmacological intervention capable of eliciting whole-body physiological adaptations that, in some settings, resemble those produced by exercise. This study extends those potential benefits by demonstrating improvements in selected cognitive functions following repeated heat exposure.
While larger controlled trials are still needed, these findings further support the growing role of therapeutic heat as a complementary strategy to promote healthy aging and maintain cognitive performance later in life.
